Term 3 2025 - Week 4 12 August 2025
Perth Primary School Calendar
From the Principal
Welcome back to Term 3!
We hope all our families enjoyed a restful break and are ready for another exciting term of learning and growth. It has been wonderful to see our students return with such enthusiasm, engaging positively in their classrooms and showing a strong commitment to their learning. As we settle into the term, we kindly remind families to keep children at home if they are feeling unwell, to help us maintain a healthy and safe environment for everyone. Thank you for your continued support!
100 days of Prep

Last week, I was very excited to receive an invitation to a party!!! A prep party to celebrate 100 days of learning in prep. We had a wonderful afternoon of pass the parcel, balloons, dancing and even cupcakes. The amount of growth that our preps have shown over those 100 days is astonishing, from learning all the letter names and sounds to being able to read and write simple texts. We cannot wait to see what the rest of the year brings for our learners.
Country Gold Selections
At the end of last term, some of our students were nominated to trial for the Country Gold Northern Midlands representative sport teams. This is a great achievement for our students. They will now train as a representative team over the next few weeks in preparation for the Carnival at the end of Term 3. We also have some staff involved;
Mrs Colgrave (coach-netball), Mrs Tempest (manager- netball) and myself coaching the AFLW team.

Swimming and Water Safety Program
The Department for Education, Children and Young People provide a vital Swimming and Water Safety Program for all Year 3, 4 and 5 students in Tasmanian Government Schools, as well as Year 6 students identified as at-risk at the end of Year 5. This year, our program will run from Monday 18 August to Friday 29 August, and it is expected that all eligible students participate. The program focuses on essential skills including water and boat safety, using personal flotation devices, survival swimming, reach-to-rescue techniques, safe entry into aquatic environments, efficient stroke development, and building swimming stamina. These skills form the foundation for safe and confident participation in aquatic activities.
We understand that this may be an anxious time for some students, and we are committed to supporting them in building independence. Adult support will be available if needed. Parents can help by visiting the pool with their child over the weekend, familiarising them with the changerooms, encouraging them to pack their own belongings, and practising drying and dressing themselves as part of their regular bath or shower routine. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Fleming.

Table Tennis
Once again, our Grade 4/5/6 students are involved in a Table Tennis program run by Table Tennis Tasmania. Each week we have had volunteers come to teach the skills of table tennis but also run a competition to crown our school champions! These students will have the opportunity to represent our school at the State Championships being held at Deloraine in Term 4.

Talking Maths: Words that Build Understanding
One of our key priorities in maths this year is strengthening students’ understanding and use of precise mathematical vocabulary during exploration, problem-solving, and discussion.
Learning mathematical vocabulary is essential for helping students understand and communicate their ideas clearly in maths. Words like digit, numeral and number help children distinguish between the symbols we use (digits), the written form (numerals), and the actual value or quantity (number). When children learn the correct terms—like sum, difference, equal or estimate—they gain the language needed to explain their thinking, solve problems confidently, and engage in meaningful mathematical discussions. Building this vocabulary early supports deeper comprehension and sets the foundation for success in more complex maths concepts later on. Encouraging students to use and explore mathematical language empowers them to become clear communicators and critical thinkers.

Esk Band
Last week, I had the pleasure of accompanying some of our Esk Band students to Newstead College to perform with the Combined Schools Band. This is always a highlight for our students, where they get to join in with other students from a variety of schools across the North to perform songs that they have been practising. They will also come together at the end of the year to perform a concert for families.
Book Week 11- 15 August 2025
At Perth Primary we will celebrate the annual CBCA book week a week earlier than most schools because Grade 3-5 students will be busy with Swimming and Water Safety the following week. We have many exciting activities planned to celebrate and promote reading.
- Beginning this week children will guess how many ‘book worms’ are in the jar each time they change their library book. The winner will keep the jar of sour worms and receive a book.
- During book week children will enjoy this years nominated books in their classroom and have an opportunity to read with buddy classes.
- Students will match staff photos with their favourite book to win a book prize.
- Book Parade – Wednesday 13 August 2025. We know this is a very exciting day for our school, especially our younger students. We appreciate it is also an event that our school community likes to enjoy. Our students will ‘parade’ around the basketball court from 9:10am by class, starting with our Kinder classes and moving through to our Grade 5-6 classes. Due to the size of our growing school, we are unable to accommodate students and families in the hall in a safe way, as such we will ‘parade’ outside. There will be some seats available for spectators if required but we encourage you to rug up!! In the event that we are unable to be outside due to weather, we will share our costumes via our Seesaw and Facebook pages.
Principal for the Day
After weeks of hard work, creativity, and determination, two students—Addison B (Principal) & Cooper M (Assistant Principal)—have earned the exciting opportunity to be Principal for a Day! 🎉
The journey began with a poster challenge, where every candidate showcased their promises and policies to win votes. Next came persuasive writing, as students crafted compelling texts to convince teachers they deserved a spot on the shortlist. After a close and thrilling election, the results were so tight that the school decided to appoint not just one, but two student leaders—one principal and one assistant principal for the day!
Our responsibilities include supporting Mrs Dean and Miss Doran with a variety of tasks. We'll be:
- Attending meetings, including looking at the school budget!
- Visiting classrooms to check in on learning
- Helping out with breaktime duties
- Sending emails to organise school activities
- And taking on other important jobs around the school throughout the day!
We’re proud to represent the student voice and excited to experience what it’s like to lead our school—even if just for a day!
