Term 3 2025 - Week 8
Perth Primary School Calendar
From the Principal
Dear Parents/Guardians,
It is lovely to see that our school gardens are ready for some spring sunshine with a wonderful display from our daffodils, shame the weather is not feeling the same way!
Open Classroom – Thursday 18 September 3:15pm – 5:00pm
By now, you should have received an invitation from your child to attend our Term 3 Open Classroom. This is designed to be an informal opportunity for families to visit their child’s classroom, view and discuss student work and have conversations with the teacher. If you feel that you may require a 1:1 conversation about your child, please make contact with the class teacher to arrange a suitable alternative time. By the end of this week, all the evidence of learning for Term 3 will be uploaded to Seesaw for parents to view. If you have any questions about your child’s work, the Open Classroom is the perfect opportunity to touch base with the class teacher.
Our School Association are also running a BBQ fundraiser at the Open Classroom, orders can be made via the Qkr app.

Our approach to Literacy
We are committed to helping every student become a confident, capable reader. That is why we use a structured and evidence-based approach to teaching literacy, built around what is known as the Big Six.
The Big Six are the essential foundations of literacy. They work together to support students as they move from learning to read, to reading to learn—and beyond. These six areas are taught explicitly and in a clear, sequenced way to ensure all students, no matter their starting point, can grow and succeed.
What are the Big Six?
- Oral Language – The ability to speak, listen, and understand the sounds we use when we talk.
- Phonological Awareness – Recognising the sounds in our speech.
- Phonics – Understanding how letters and sounds work together.
- Vocabulary – Knowing and using a wide range of words.
- Fluency – understanding the meaning of words and sentences as they are being read.
- Comprehension – using the other five skills to understand what is being read.
The Big Six are not just skills for early readers or young students. They continue to be important throughout your child’s education.
How can families support literacy at home?
You play an important role in your child’s literacy development. Talking with your child, reading together, playing word games and asking questions about stories are all powerful ways to support what your child is learning at school.
If you would like to know more about how the Big Six are taught in our classrooms or how to support your child’s literacy at home, please contact to your child’s teacher. Together, we can help every student thrive as a reader, writer, and thinker.

Swimming & Water Safety Program
Our Grade 3-5 students have just completed what is a very tiring fortnight of Swimming and Water Safety. We are always surprised at how well our students manage the changes to routine and independence required during the program. We are lucky that our students are given the opportunity to participate in such a valuable program and hope that our students get to put their swimming skills and knowledge into practise as the weather warms up. We also appreciate the flexibility of the whole school as despite the SWSP targeting the Grade 3-5 cohort, it has a huge impact across the school with changes to timetables and routines.
High School Transition visits
Our Grade 5 and 6 students are provided with many opportunities to engage and connect with our two feeder high schools, Kings Meadows and Cressy. This term they have participated in Challenge Days at Cressy and Kings Meadows and had visits from King Meadows High with their travelling transition expo. These activities provide our students with a chance to explore the options provided by both schools and provide them with the chance to familiarise themselves with the school and staff prior to beginning Grade 7.

Teacher Aide Appreciation Week
Last week we recognised and celebrated the amazing work of our Teacher Assistants. We are incredibly lucky to have such a dedicated and skilled team of TA’s working with our students. I am very proud at the level of professionalism displayed by our TA’s, all contributing to ensuring that our students are known, safe, well and learning every single day.

Book Week

An annual favourite event for both staff and students is Book Week! During Week 5 we celebrated books and the joy of reading. All classes read many of our newly purchased books that were nominated for the CBCA Book of the Year Awards and discussed what elements made these books this year’s best reads. These books are now available to borrow from our school library or watch on StoryBox. The StoryBox username is perthprimary and the password is also perthprimary.
Students enjoyed guessing how many ‘bookworms’ were in the jar each time they changed their library books. Congratulations to Vienna for her correct guess and receiving the jar of sour worms.
We had many detectives asking staff questions to gain clues to help them match the teachers to their favourite books. This activity demonstrated to the students the variety of books teachers read now and when they were a child. Well done to Kieran, Nixon and Pheobe who had the closest guesses.
Coming together for the book character costume parade certainly was a highlight! This event introduced children to books they may have not previously read. We loved the creativity and confidence of the students as they paraded and discussed their book character.
Remember to keep reading at home to receive this year’s exciting reading rewards!

School Satisfaction Survey 2025
Every year the Department for Education, Children and Young People conducts a School Satisfaction Survey to find out what your child(ren)'s school does well and where it may improve. Your feedback is very important to help us inform our school improvement planning and decision-making.
If you have not had the opportunity to complete the survey about Perth Primary School yet, it is open until Friday 19 September 2025 and should take about 5 minutes of your time. Each family should nominate one person to fill in this survey for their child(ren).
Take the online survey by clicking the link or pasting it in your browser, https://nam.dcv.ms/4ARXzD2bK The survey is carried out on a secure website and all responses are anonymous and confidential. All families in this school received the same survey link and no identifying information is collected. A summary of the survey results will be provided to schools. Responses from individuals or small groups will NOT be disclosed to any Department for Education, Children and Young People staff.
