Term 1 2025 - Week 8 27 March 2025
Perth Primary School Calendar
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had a fantastic start to the term, with engaged and enthusiastic learners across all year levels. Our teachers have been diving into new professional learning around a structured approach to literacy, including Word Origins and UFLI and it is already making a huge impact on student progress. It is wonderful to see such growth in learning so early in the term! On another note, our students are looking fantastic in their uniforms, with the new shorts proving to be a great addition.
Attendance Matters!
We have noticed a high number of unauthorised absences already this year. Attending school every day is essential—not only for academic progress but also for building strong social connections. With our structured literacy approach, regular attendance is even more important, as missing school means missing key sequential learning, making it harder for students to keep up. We encourage families to prioritise attendance to ensure every child has the best opportunity to succeed.
Structured Literacy Approach
At Perth Primary students engage in a minimum on 60 minutes of daily structured literacy instruction. A structured approach includes explicit instruction of content that follows a logical order and builds on concepts previously learned. Another aspect of structured literacy is the ongoing monitoring and assessment of student learning.
This year we are using UFLI (Prep-2) and Word Origins (3-6) to assist us to deliver the best possible learning for our students. UFLI is a phonics program that focuses on foundational reading skills necessary for proficient reading. Word Origins provides the next step in spelling, reading and vocabulary instruction for students in middle to upper primary school and beyond. Word Origins builds student knowledge of morphology, parts of words that create meaning, and the etymology, or language of origin, of the English language.

Reading Rewards
Reading with your child at home will help your child in all learning areas at school. You or your child can record the books your child brings home from their teacher, library books or any books you have at home. In this busy, modern world we know that children, particularly in the primary years, will need more encouragement to read so we are offering incentives for students to read regularly at home. Let your child’s teacher know if you need a replacement reading log.

Leadership positions
It has been pleasing to see our elected leaders hit the ground running this year. Our Parliament have met and are looking at the values and purpose of our roles and how we can make a positive impact on the school. Our House Captains have already put their leadership skills to use organising and supporting at our recent athletics carnival. We are excited about the opportunities ahead for our leaders as they grow their leadership capacity.

Ride2School
Last week we held our very popular Ride2School Day, it is always a huge event with over 140 bikes, scooters and skaters arriving at school. It was great to see everyone wearing appropriate safety gear and being safe and careful around the roads.

Grade 3-6 Athletics Carnival
Last week we held our Grade 3-6 Athletics Carnival. It was great to see the house spirit in action alongside some excellent individual and team performances. Bramich came out winners with a clean sweep of the relay races. On Friday, our school representative team will be participating in the Northern Midlands Athletic Carnival. We wish them the best of luck!

School Association
Last week we held our first School Association meeting for the year. The School Association plays a vital role in fostering a strong partnership between families, the community, and the school. As a School Association member, you contribute to shaping the direction of the school, ensuring it remains a supportive and thriving environment for students.
Being part of the School Association is a meaningful way to have a voice in the future of our school. Whether you attend meetings, contribute ideas, or help with school fundraisers, your involvement makes a difference. If you are interested in joining or learning more, we encourage you to get involved—your support is invaluable to our school community!
A big thank you to our elected members and general committee members, we always welcome new faces! Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 10 June, starting at 6pm in the school staff room.
Wellbeing Ambassadors
We are thrilled to have a passionate team of Wellbeing Ambassadors this year, capably led by Mrs Forrester. Each Wednesday at lunchtime, they create a welcoming space in the rotunda, offering fun activities and support for their peers.
The majority of our ambassadors come from the Grade 3-4 cohort, and this initiative provides them with a fantastic opportunity to develop their leadership skills while fostering a positive and inclusive playground environment.
Be sure to stop by the rotunda and see them in action!

Brixibition
Congratulations to all our Grade winners for Brixhibition and our Overall winner who will represent our school at the regional Brixhibition. Well done to Theodore, Murphy, Amelia and Grace.
